Overview
Malaysia offers a broad higher-education landscape that includes public universities, private universities, international branch campuses, and private university colleges. Together, these institutions provide a wide range of bachelor's degree pathways across business, engineering, medicine, hospitality, computing, creative industries, and other fields.
International Branch Campuses
International branch campuses are fully integrated extensions of overseas universities, including institutions such as Monash, Nottingham, Reading, Heriot-Watt, Curtin, and Xiamen. Some programmes also offer twinning or transfer arrangements, allowing students to complete part of their studies overseas while receiving degrees aligned with the home campus.
Private Universities & University Colleges
Many private universities also have collaborations with established universities/institutions in the U.K., U.S. and Australia to offer twinning programmes. Private university colleges generally operate on a smaller scale than universities and may specialise in selected academic or professional areas.
Entry Requirements & Duration
The Bachelor's degree level is usually for students from the age of 19/20 onwards with post-secondary qualifications such as the STPM (which is equivalent to GCE 'A' level) or Pre-University / University Foundation qualifications. These degree programmes normally take between 3 to 5 years. After obtaining their Bachelor's degree qualifications students can proceed further to do postgraduate studies.
Malaysia Qualifications Agency (MQA)
The Malaysia Qualifications Agency (MQA) is the statutory body responsible for quality assurance in Malaysian higher education. Programmes accredited by MQA are recognised locally and support students in pursuing further study, employment, or professional progression.
In April 2024, MQA and the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE 中国教育部留学服务中心) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation in education recognition and quality assurance. This supports the recognition of Malaysian higher-education programmes that have obtained MQA accreditation.
